Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and one of Scandinavia's metropolises. The city is characterised by its location on the water: a modern cityscape with futuristic buildings has been established around the harbour in recent years. As the seat of government and the royal house, the city has a long history and several magnificent buildings in the centre. The city also has a lot to offer in the way of culinary delights. Besides the classics Smørrebrød and the Danish version of the hot dog, you will find some of the best restaurants in the world in Copenhagen.

One of the most liveable cities in the world

One of the most liveable cities in the world
Hyggelig Copenhagen
Photo: Jesse, Adobe Stock
The Danish capital has been named the world's most livable city several times. Not surprisingly, the Danes are among the happiest people in the world. One "recipe for success" of satisfaction is hygge: a core component of the Danish way of life. The Danes place a lot of value on coziness, security and being together with friends and family.

While strolling through the city, you can immerse yourself in the Danish way of life in numerous "hygge" cafes. Here, for example, the Danish cinnamon buns "Kanelsnegle" are served.

Surrounded by water

Water is omnipresent in the cityscape of Copenhagen: Denmark's capital is located on the island of Zealand, directly on the Øresund strait that separates Denmark and Sweden. The Øresund Bridge, which is just under 7.8 kilometers long, connects Copenhagen with the southern Swedish metropolis of Malmo. At the harbor arm Nyhavn is the street of the same name with the famous colorful gabled houses. The area is one of the city's most popular entertainment districts, with numerous restaurants, bars and dance clubs lining the street.

European Cycling Capital

The number one means of transportation in the city is the bicycle. In Copenhagen, there are more bicycles than inhabitants; 45% of the population use bicycles for their daily commute. Accordingly, the two-wheelers are present on the streets. The city has a very well-developed infrastructure with multi-lane bike paths, on which you have the right of way over car traffic.

On a bike ride through Copenhagen, you will pass all the major sights in a few hours and also get to know the modern side of the city: Around the harbor are some futuristic buildings such as the Opera House, the Concert Hall and the library popularly known as the "Black Diamond".

Home of star cuisine

Copenhagen's restaurant scene enjoys a high reputation worldwide. Some of the best restaurants in the world have settled here. The "Noma" has already been voted the best restaurant in the world five times. The philosophy of using mainly local and seasonal products and reinterpreting traditional Nordic dishes is typical of Copenhagen cuisine.

"Geranium," named the best restaurant of 2022 by a jury of experts, also has its home in Copenhagen - it is the city's first 3-star restaurant. The menu focuses on light dishes and is entirely meat-free. The restaurant is located on the 8th floor of Fælledparken in Copenhagen's Østerbro district.

Smørrebrød: A culinary cultural treasure

Typical for Copenhagen are the rye breads called Smørrebrød. They are topped with salty butter and optionally with meat, fish, herbs and vegetables - there are no limits to creativity here. It is eaten in style with a knife and fork. In the city area you will find a variety of traditional restaurants that specialize in creating novel versions of Smørrebrød.

Hot dog Danish style

Another culinary classic you must try in Copenhagen is the Danish version of the hot dog. It is served with fried onions, pickled cucumber slices and ketchup, mustard and remoulade. In Copenhagen, you'll see the typical snack stands on almost every corner.

One of the most popular is "johns hotdog deli" - it is located right in front of the train station building. Vegatarians and vegans will find what they are looking for at "DØP". The two downtown locations offer classic sausage as well as a goat sausage and vegetarian and vegan hot dogs.
