Activities in the Mühlviertler Hochland

The region is ideal for gentle enjoyment of nature by bike or on foot. Numerous hiking trails run through the romantic forests and over the rolling hills, which can nevertheless be challenging due to the constant ups and downs. The beauty of hiking in the region is that you are often on your own here. You can find crowded trails elsewhere. The Mühlviertler Hochland is a region for connoisseurs, for all those who can enjoy wide landscapes and want to find peace while moving in a relaxed way.

The beautiful sides of the Mühlviertler Hochland can also be best explored by bike. Side roads with little traffic draw the eye to the landscape and the many interesting details along the roadside. Traditional farms alternate with small settlements that exude a peaceful and authentic aura. The village inns offer excellent food and drink. Here, too, the high mountains are missing, but the climbs are sometimes quite challenging. That is why many guests appreciate e-bikes, but the landscape can also be explored with racing bikes and mountain bikes.

Welcome to the cross-country skiing paradise Mühlviertler Hochland

When winter arrives, the Mühlviertler Hochland is transformed into a white dream landscape. Then, too, gentle activities come to the fore, above all cross-country skiing. The landscape is also perfectly suited for this. Over the hills, through the forests and around the villages, cross-country trails are groomed that are among the most beautiful in the country. Whether sporty around the Sternstein or gentle around Bad Leonfelden, cross-country skiing is an integral part of winter sports in the region.  There is also a fine offer for alpine skiing fans with the lifts at Sternstein. Those who prefer to roam the landscape without skis will find wonderful winter hiking trails here.

This gravel tour was a great adventure for us. We started the tour in Passau following the Donau to Regensburg. This gave us two days to to get us a little into it. It broke the part of the Donau into two, we ended the tour in 8 days in Passau. Instead of following the GPX we sometimes followed the indications of the official cycling tours to stay away from busy traffic.

Wunderschöne Waldpassagen, einladende Helfenbergerhütte, motivierender "Halber Weg" Stein, andächtiges Denkmal "Eiserner Vorhang", beeindruckender Windradpark, aussichtsreiche Sternsteinwarte und historischer Ortskern Bad Leonfelden.
