A real highlight is the GutsMuths Rennsteig Run, a cross-country run along the Rennsteig in memory of GutsMuths, the co-founder of gymnastics from the Goethe era. It is the largest and possibly the most beautiful landscape run in Central Europe.

The Schneekopflauf ends at the eponymous summit, with the last part still requiring to overcome the altitude difference between 711 m and 978 m.

Der Schneekopflauf XL führt Euch durch die Tiefen des Thüringer Waldes bis hinauf ins Ziel auf dem Schneekopf. Nach dem gemeinsamen Start mit der 12,7-Km-Traditionsstrecke vom Sportplatz in Schmiedefeld, über Großen Finsterberg (944m) und dem originalen Rennsteig bis zur Wetterbaude Schmücke (944m) erfolgt hier die Trennung. Für die Langstrecke geht es hinab nach Gehlberg und bis hinein in den Gehlberger Grund (585m). Steil führt die Strecke über den Wilderer Pfad  und Hölle hinauf auf das Schneekopfplateau ins Ziel (978m). Der 23. Schneekopflauf findet am 04.07.2026 statt!
