The word "ärjä" means a windy place or a steep shore cliff. A paddling trip around this mysterious esker island is a great day trip destination. Most of the island's shores are shallow sandy beaches, and the water is clear and clean. A paddling trip along the shores is ideal for a peaceful exploration around the island.
The trip starts at Säipä dock and is recommended to be done downstream. There are plenty of sights on the trip. At the beginning, you follow an impressive sandy cliff, and after paddling one kilometer, you are in the Lentohiekka area. The western end of the island, Karkeapää, is about 1.5 kilometers away. At the tip, in the water level and bottom, there is an old barge wreck.
Karkeapää has the Kalamaja day hut and campfire site, where a snack break is recommended while admiring the largest inland sea bay in Finland opening to the west. After the break, the trip continues along Ärjä's northern shores and coves to the tip of Kirkkosäikä. Around the narrow, open sandbar, a huge shore curve opens before you, with the endpoint of the trip at the other end.
