Our tour starts in Ushuaia on the waterfront promenade. Shortly after setting off, it becomes clear why this tour is so popular in Tierra del Fuego: the water of the Beagle Channel runs directly in front of the city, with the Andes mountains rising steeply behind it. It is precisely this proximity of sea and mountains that shapes the character of the trip. Our route first takes us past small islands, where cormorants and sea lions can often be seen, and to Les Éclaireurs lighthouse, which is the most famous sea mark in the canal. We also reach the area of the penguin colony on Isla Martillo. Many tours approach the island by catamaran or yacht; some programs combine the boat trip with a landing, others only allow observation from the water. For us, it remains a boat trip with animal observation. The history of the area is closely linked to seafaring and the Yámana or Yaghan.
