The Alpin Express lives up to its name. The cabin swiftly floats upward and soon after, Saas-Fee lies far below like a toy landscape. At the Morenia mid-station, you get out; the cable car continues up to Felskinn. “Via ferrata Mittaghorn,” a blue signpost shows the direction. You hike through a labyrinth of oversized boulders and finally on a path upwards to Gemsrigg, where a flagpole marks the via ferrata start. The rocks are grippy, the distances between the climbing aids are not too far apart. The route along the ridge is a varied climb. At the first key point, a vertical rise, a bit of strength is required; then you continue evenly, step by step, upwards. The Mittaghorn via ferrata was opened in 2004. It is the perfect complement in the Saas valley to the more difficult via ferrata on Jägihorn and the long route at the Via Ferrata del Lago.
