The crossing of the Staufen in the Chiemgau Alps runs over the Mittelstaufensteig. This via ferrata connects the two main peaks Zwiesel and Hochstaufen.
Author’s recommendation
From the Hochstaufen, there are two more paths down to the Padinger Alm. A steep hiking trail over the Stone Hunter and the Buchmahd, as well as the Goldtropfsteig. The Goldtropfsteig is not a via ferrata, but it is very steep and includes climbing of the first grade.

Safety information
When crossing the Mittelstaufensteig, light unsecured climbing sections must also be overcome. In addition, metal pins protrude from the ground in the Hochstaufen area. Ultimately, the descent from the Hochstaufen is a long path, descending more than 1000 meters in elevation. Therefore, the descent should not be underestimated.Tips and suggestions

The tour begins at the hiking parking lot above Weißbach (897m). Here, a path goes right next to a signpost through the forest uphill. After crossing a gravel road, this turns into a steep path over a meadow. The path ends at the Zwiesel Alm (1387m). Behind the alm, the ascent to the summit of Zwiesel begins. The path is less steep than the previous path and ends between the summits of Zwiesel and Zennokopf. To the left, a path leads to Zwiesel (1782m), to the right to Zennokopf (1756m). From Zennokopf, the Mittelstaufensteig is followed. It first leads steeply downhill between dwarf pines. This is followed by the first short section of via ferrata. After this, the Roßkahrscharte (1444m) is reached. Then the ascent begins again via the via ferrata. Climbing leads to Hendelbergskopf (1613m) and Mittelstaufen (1657m). After reaching the summit of Mittelstaufen, a descent begins again. This ends the via ferrata. Then the last ascent to the Reichenhaller Haus (1750m) and the summit of Hochstaufen (1771m) follows. The descent from Hochstaufen first follows the way back until the point where the Mittelstaufensteig branches off to the right. Here begins the descent through the Bartlmahd. The path leads through forest to a parking lot next to Padinger Alm (654m).
