Sas Rigais is the second highest summit in the Geisler group. It is reachable from the Mittagsscharte via an easy via ferrata. Also magnificent is a crossing of the summit from the Mittagsscharte to the Wasserrinnental. Impressive viewpoint especially over the Sella and Langkofel groups.

    Author’s recommendation

We did the route in November. Outside the lift season, only a few like-minded people are on the way. However, there are also few accommodation options in the valley. The best time to do the route is in the autumn months.

    Safety information

For sure-footed and head-for-heights climbers, this ascent is possible without a via ferrata set. The cable-secured sections are rather short, so this ascent and descent do not really qualify as a via ferrata. However, anyone who is not sure-footed in this terrain should not forgo the via ferrata set.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot in Daunei, a district of Wolkenstein, you reach the Juachütte (1,903 m) on a wide path No. 3. From here it goes 30 m down to the stream bed of the Ruf de Ncisles. Continue on a wide forest road to Rifugio Firenze (2,037 m). Now continue on path No. 13 towards Col da la Crusc until a signpost directs us to the Mittagsscharte. From here, steeply climb through the notch to an altitude of 2,509 m, where the start of the short via ferrata is located, with 2 sections of difficulty B. Slightly difficult with many handholds and footholds, we reach the south-facing cirque. Here follows well-marked tracks upwards to an altitude of 2,877 m. Now along the rocks heading east (repeatedly secured by cable) to the south ridge of Sas Rigais. Here the ridge is continuously secured with cable with B sections to the summit. The last section to the summit is somewhat exposed. A head for heights is advisable.

    Descent
Return along the same path into the long cirque, now pay attention to the markings and the path that leads us to the Mittagsscharte. Also descend towards the west into the Mittagsscharte with a few B sections. Then follow along the notch down until we reach the junction Col Reiser (yellow writing on a rock). A short ascent and then follow the path down to path 2B. Shortly after we reach the junction 3B to the Regensburgerhütte. Down to the hut and then return to the starting point the same way.
