Very beautiful, varied, but demanding via ferrata in the Dolomites starting from the Karerpass over the Masarè and Rotwand via ferrata.

Two very beautiful ridge via ferratas near the Karerpass with very nice panoramic views of the Dolomites on the eastern side and the Western Alps. The Masarè via ferrata is very varied and overcomes some ridge towers, winds through rock fissures or around larger rock formations, with the climbing never being particularly difficult (max. C). The Rotwand via ferrata is relatively uniform and not particularly steep (max. B).

    Author’s recommendation

The via ferrata is also very suitable for children, as it is not particularly difficult and the grips are child-friendly.

    Safety information

The via ferratas are prone to rockfall, especially the Rotwand via ferrata.

    Roadbook

From the Karerpass follow trail 552 and then 548 to the Rotwand hut (approx. 1:30 hrs). Behind the hut (see signpost) at a fork in the path, go left up to Punta Masarè (2560 m), the starting point for the via ferrata. Up and down along the via ferrata until you reach a grassy cirque. There begins the ascent to the Fensterturm or the southern entrance of the Rotwand via ferrata. This starts immediately with the crux (C). After crossing this, continue along a relatively easy via ferrata (B) to the summit of the Rotwand (2807 m). The descent continues northward along a relatively easy via ferrata to the Vajolon pass (2590 m). From there continue north and then back to the Rotwand hut via trail 551. From the Rotwand hut follow trail 549, past the Christomannos memorial, to the Paolina hut and from there either walk back to the Karerpass or take the chairlift to the valley and then walk back to the Karerpass.

    Equipment

The usual equipment (helmet, climbing harness) is necessary for the via ferrata. Due to the altitude, lightweight alpine boots or suitable hiking boots for experienced and enduring walkers are recommended.
