Dachstein by fair means: via Hunerschartensteig and shoulder ascent to summit happiness.
The Hoher Dachstein is a special mountain in many respects: It is the highest mountain of two federal states, Styria and Upper Austria, the second highest mountain of the northern Eastern Alps, and it also hosts the easternmost glacier complex of the Alps. It also has a special significance for mountaineering history: The Edge Crevasse Path is the oldest via ferrata in the Alps. However, climate change is affecting this historic route: huge transverse crevasses make the approach impassable, especially later in the season. On the shoulder ascent, due to the prepared track to the Seethaler Hut, you are mostly on the safe side, but even here the edge crevasse may force some improvisation! Luckily, the summit view is little affected by the constructions on the Hunerkogel, and if you worked your way up from the valley station, you also have the feeling of having conquered a truly big mountain!
