Selected alternatives for you
A beautiful via ferrata from Preiner Gscheid, which can also be easily reached by public transport (at least in summer). With nice views and varied surroundings. Since the wall is south-facing, you can do the route almost all year round with the appropriate experience, equipment, and weather conditions.

From Preiner Gscheid, the path goes through the forest for some time. There are many junctions here, so it is helpful to study the route carefully to avoid wrong turns. After reaching the valley in front of the Preiner Wall, it follows a forest road beneath the Preiner Wall towards the northwest. Around an old debris flow area, you can turn right and head directly towards the wall. There are frequently animal trails but no continuous path. The terrain is quite steep and not easy. However, if you simply follow the debris flow upwards, you arrive exactly at the start of the Haidsteig. This should only be done under suitable weather conditions!

The Haidsteig itself is a nice C/D grade via ferrata with a good view of the Heukuppe and invites you to take a break at the Black Madonna if visibility is good.

Once at the top, it is not far to the summit of the Preiner Wall, and the descent via Neue Seehütte, the Göbl-Kühn-Steig to Waxriegelhaus and then back through the Preintal to Preiner Gscheid is also worthwhile. Not only because of the opportunity to refresh yourself but also because there is another great view of the Preiner Wall with the just completed via ferrata.

    Author’s recommendation

I have also done this route in mid-December and in February. If the weather is right and there isn't too much fresh snow on the wall, it works quite well, as the wall is almost exactly south-facing and warms up quickly. However, I recommend carefully checking the conditions on site and possibly leaving it, or else crampons should be included in your gear.

    Safety information

The appropriate via ferrata equipment (via ferrata set, harness, helmet) and hiking gear (sturdy shoes, rain jacket, etc.) should definitely be used. It is also recommended to get the right hiking map in advance, as there is no reception especially in the area of the approach.

In winter, additional equipment may be needed (crampons, snowshoes, gloves, warm clothing, etc.).
