Safety information
From the Zlackensattel the path is only sparsely marked (partly cairns) and should therefore be attempted only in good visibility.
The short stretch to the Gr. Feistringstein summit is secured as a via ferrata.
If you intend to "include" the summit, appropriate experience is necessary and via ferrata equipment should be taken along.
Tips and suggestions
Exposed, protected passages and climbing sections only for summit ascent.Roadbook
From the Seeberghof, take the marked path 863 straight down across the meadow to a footbridge where the Seebach is crossed. Ascend in switchbacks on a beautiful trail, until after 100 meters of elevation gain a forest road is reached. There is no adequate marking here. On the gently descending forest road heading south, after 300 meters, you arrive at the huts of the Hackenalm.
Now follow the markings upstream along the creek, lastly through steep beech forest to the Hackentörl at 1300 m altitude. Here, a path from the Oischingalm and a path from the Feistringgraben join from the left.
Turn right and climb about 100 meters more along the ridge. Then the path turns left and becomes flatter. Above us are now the Feistringsteine; we cross the south faces until at about 1600 m altitude we reach a hairpin in the dwarf pines, where you can look back at the south faces and the Hackentörl. Continuing keeping right, following the markings (first still dwarf pines, then alpine meadow) upwards until the signpost at the Zlackensattel (1746 m) is reached.
Now we leave the marked, clearly visible path that leads straight up to the Kampl and go slightly uphill to the right across beautiful terrain with hollows to eastward meadows toward Feistringstein (from Zlackensattel the marking is only sparse!).
At the sign "The ascent of the summit is very difficult ....." the hike to the Großer Feistringstein ends.
The continuation to the summit is a via ferrata of grade AB with one section of C. For the ascent, you should have via ferrata equipment with you.
The via ferrata starts with a descent (about 50 meters elevation loss) into the notch before the Gr. Feistringstein. This is still very easy. Then down left over scree terrain to a chimney. After a short, steep ascent, you reach the key section. Those having difficulties here should consider that they will also have to overcome this section on the descent and should turn back.
After overcoming the steep key section, continue easier upwards through a scree gully, then traverse left into the next gully and out onto the summit meadow.
Return by the same route!
Walking times: Parking lot - Hackentörl 1.25 hrs, Hackentörl - Zlackensattel 1.25 hrs, Zlackensattel - Feistringstein sign 1 hr, Sign - Feistringstein summit 0.5 hrs.
Return is slightly shorter!
