In the border area between Austria and Italy, a fairly easy via ferrata (mainly A/B, key section C) runs along the flank of the Elferkofel. The Alpinisteig is a classic of the Dolomites not because of its challenging route, but due to its fantastic views. Additionally, the approximately 16 km long route reveals numerous historic war positions. The Italian mountain troops "Alpini," after whom the route is named, once chose this path in World War I to retake the Elfer, which was occupied by Austrian troops. Accordingly, the route is divided into an Austrian section (up to Elferscharte) and an Italian section (Elferscharte to Inneres Loch). This route is suitable for anyone with sufficient experience in alpine terrain. It is mostly a protected high trail, with the key section at the very beginning on the ascent of the Austrian part (up to C).
