At Basel SBB station we start our route with a first round into the old town. Then we proceed upstream along the Rhine to the paper museum. There we take the ferry to the other side of the Rhine (unfortunately this cannot be shown on the map) and go downstream along the Rhine to the "Middle Bridge" and back through the old town to the station. Along the way, we pass various museums; those who want to visit them can shorten the route and include one of the museums.
Author’s recommendation
The route already leads to many of the most beautiful places in Basel, but there are also five great walking routes signposted in the old town. I would recommend the Platter route, as we have already seen many spots of the other four routes. Under the point "Literature" there is a link to the flyer of the city walks.

Roadbook
We start our route at Basel SBB station, keep left on the forecourt, and cross the Elisabethenanlage towards Elisabethenstraße, through which we enter the old town. At Elisabethenkirche, we turn left and pass the theatre to the "Tinguely Fountain." Continuing, keeping left, we go to Barfüsserplatz and through Gerbergasse further into the old town. Across the marketplace, we come to Schiffslände but do not yet cross the bridge; instead, we walk up the Rheinsprung to Münsterplatz. We cross it and come through Rittergasse to the art museum. On the left, we go into St. Alban-Vorstadt, past the Cartoon Museum to Mühlenberg down to the Rhine. There is the paper mill. From here, we take the ferry across to the other side of the Rhine (this unfortunately cannot be shown on the map; the way to Schwarzwaldbrücke is not really worth seeing, so I would recommend the ferry ride), and payment on the ferry is only possible with Swiss francs! On the other side of the Rhine, we go downstream under the Wettstein Bridge to the Middle Bridge. We cross it and turn left back into the old town, past Martinskirche towards Freie Straße. At Dreizack Fountain, we keep right and turn towards Barfüsserkirche. We see the "Tinguely Fountain" again, turn left before it, and go through Aeschenvorstadt to Aeschenplatz. Over Aeschengraben, we then return to the station where our route ends.
