Herrenberg is one of the most beautiful half-timbered towns along the German Half-Timbered Road on the route “From the Neckar to the Black Forest”.
A half-timbered path leads through the historic old town, explaining the features of Alemannic and Franconian half-timbering at 23 stations. Small information boards are attached to characteristic buildings.
Other sights include the collegiate church and the sculpture “Pendelschlag 2000: Jerg Ratgeb, cooks and a pug” by artists Hellmut Ehrath and Peter Lenk.

From the station we go left on Bahnhofstrasse and Horber Strasse, through the underpass of Reinhold-Schick-Platz and come directly into Bronngasse of the historic old town. To the right we hike “Auf dem Graben” of the former city fortifications.
At Schulstrasse 8 we encounter a well-preserved house with decorative half-timbering from around 1700.
Left into Bronngasse, you reach the Bebenhäuser Klosterhof (1484) at the corner of Badgasse. From there, the Badstubengässle branches off to the left to the Pendelschlag. The fountain sculpture shows the quartering of the Herrenberg painter Jerg Ratgeb due to his active participation in the Peasants’ War of 1526. Next to it, seven contemporary cooks march behind a pug.
Back on Badgasse and Froschgasse, we walk along the old city wall with its battlement.
At Hirschgasse 16 we see a half-timbered house with the characteristic bay window.
A landmark of Herrenberg are the many steps, such as the Lion’s Steps in Stuttgarter Straße 11. For reasons of economy, the worn sandstone steps were turned around.
The narrow Stuttgarter Straße leads to the market square. On the way, we pass gabled houses that show construction elements of Alemannic half-timbering (lap joints, swording). Mortise and tenon joints and shapes characterize the younger Franconian half-timbering.
The market square of Herrenberg is one of the most beautiful in Württemberg. After the devastating city fire of 1635, the half-timbered houses around it were rebuilt. In contrast, the neoclassical town hall dates from 1806.
Up Kirchgasse we climb to the collegiate church, another landmark of Herrenberg.
The last stations on the half-timbered path are located in Tübinger Straße and Spitalgasse.
