By train along the east shore, by boat across Lake Hallstatt, we approach the old, picturesque village where in the historic tunnel on the salt mountain we see how salt was mined in the past.
The most beautiful way to get to Hallstatt is by boat over the lake. Therefore, we approach by train along the east shore from Bad Goisern. A short walk leads us to the Catholic church of Hallstatt, where we find a double choir and 2 wing altars in its Gothic interior. From the cemetery we continue walking on Hallstatt Road towards Bad Goisern until we reach a slightly elevated bend at a point where there is a nice view of Hallstatt for a photo. Back to the church path, into the village to the market square, further on Hallstatt Road, from there into the slightly elevated Dr. Friedrich-Morton Path and on the Echerntal Path to the Salt Mountain Railway which takes us up the salt mountain where the skywalk at Rudolf Tower and the grave field with a show grave await. The highlight is the visit to the historic salt mine with slides, old ladders, and an underground salt lake. You return to daylight by the mining train and go down to the valley by the Salt Mountain Railway.

Salt Mountain Railway
Guided tours of the Hallstatt salt mine are offered online every half hour https://tickets.salzwelten.at/de/2/date. Based on our personal experience, if for example you plan for 2 p.m. and want to take the train up at 2 p.m., it is advisable to book a slot half an hour earlier, as when you arrive at the valley station, there can sometimes be a long queue before the turnstile, which only lets you pass within the time window of the booked time, e.g. 1:30 p.m. for half an hour from 1:30 p.m. After the turnstile it can take another 30 minutes with high demand until you can take the train uphill.
In summary, from arrival at the valley station to the mountain ride it can take 40 minutes despite having an online ticket booked for a specific time for a tour of the salt mine with mountain and valley ride. At the turnstile in the valley station, which is located halfway in the queue for the train, you are let through for 30 minutes from the booked time. Not earlier and not later. So you need to factor in that you might have to wait longer until you reach the turnstile and then it still works out with the booked time window.

Roadbook
You arrive, for example by car, at Steeg-Gosau station in Bad Goisern where you board the regional train towards Obertraun Dachstein Caves or the Regional Express towards Selztal or Stainach-Irdning. By train you travel along the east shore of Lake Hallstatt to the Hallstatt stop where you get off and take the MS Stefanie of Hallstättersee Shipping Hemetsberger GmbH across Lake Hallstatt to Hallstatt Market. From the landing stage in Hallstatt, we turn left into Gosaumühl Street, which we immediately leave to the right to get into Mühlbach Alley, turning right and at the end climbing the Covered Stairs up to Church Path. Through the Catholic church we reach the cemetery and the ossuary. We then go down on the Church Stairs to Gosaumühl Street from which we have a little further north a slight bend with a nice view back to Hallstatt. This viewpoint is often used for photos of Hallstatt.
From the photo spot we return to the church and continue on Church Path to the community stairs leading to the market square. We leave the market square westwards on Wolf Lane, which continues as Lake Road, where we turn right to the Upper Market Square to get on Dr. Friedrich-Morton Path, which runs slightly above Lake Road and joins it. On Lake Road we cross Lahn Street. After Lahn Street, Lake Road becomes Echerntal Path, which flows into Salt Mountain Road, where after a few meters uphill on the left is the valley station of the Salt Mountain Railway.
By the Salt Mountain Railway we get to the Hallstatt high valley where we hike uphill to the miners' house to take part in the guided tour into the tunnel. Afterwards we go back the same way, take the train down to the valley and walk back on Echerntal Path to the lake at Hallstatt Lahn.
