If you want to explore Lisbon in a relaxed way, you can take a seat in one of the old yellow trams – the line 28E is especially popular.
The railway connects some of the best-known districts and is a good way to get a first overview. The route leads through narrow streets, past churches, viewpoints, and residential houses. Along the way, the tram passes through various neighborhoods, including Graça, Alfama, Baixa, and Estrela. Each has its own character – from traditional and quiet to lively and busy. The ride itself is part of the experience: the carriages are narrow, with limited seating, and on the steep sections the brakes sometimes screech. The pace is leisurely, giving the chance to look out the window and take in the impressions. You see both the everyday life of the city and well-known sights – such as the Sé Cathedral, the Estrela Basilica, or the many small squares with cafés and views. You can board at various stops. If you want to travel the entire route, be sure to allow enough time – and preferably avoid rush hours, as the tram is very popular.
