Foreword to the city walking tour through Salzburg
The tour and texts were created based on a very good blog by Horst Gassner, whose hometown is Salzburg. On this circular route, you can view the Mozart city Salzburg from different perspectives or from different viewpoints and also get to know some of the most important sights of the Salzburg city center. How much time you should plan for this of course depends a lot on how much time you spend at the respective sights (for example, whether you want to visit the fortress from the inside or take a detour to the Kapuzinerberg). Hence the quite vague indication of 3 to 8 hours.
The route is a suggestion based on the blog and can of course be varied according to personal preferences.

The city walking tour in detail
Through Linzergasse to the Staatsbrücke
Linzergasse is a good starting point for this circular route through the Mozart city Salzburg because of the good parking options in the Linzergasse underground car park or the plenty of parking spaces available nearby (but only in the short-term parking zone, maximum 3 hours).
Of course, you can also start this route at any other point along the route, especially if you are not traveling with your own car.
Right at the beginning of Linzergasse, you pass by St. Sebastian's Church. The cemetery contains the gravesites of some well-known personalities, such as those of the Mozart family or Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich.
Detour via Kapuzinerberg
On the further way through the pedestrian zone you can turn left through an archway into Stefan-Zweig-Weg near the end of Linzergasse and make a detour via the Kapuzinerberg (638 m, 210 m ascent, 1h), one of Salzburg's city mountains. A detailed description can be found in the corresponding hiking description.
Don't be discouraged by the steep climb right at the start! The path soon flattens and leads almost entirely through the forest. If you take the detour via Kapuzinerberg, you will be rewarded with very nice views over Salzburg. Especially the view over to Mirabell Garden is very beautiful.
Over the Staatsbrücke to Getreidegasse
At the end of Linzergasse you reach the Staatsbrücke, under which the Salzach flows. Since 2002, an excursion ship also operates here, which goes as far as Hellbrunn. In Hellbrunn you will find the zoo and also the water features. But you should save that for another day, otherwise it will simply be too much.
After crossing the Staatsbrücke, you enter the world-famous Getreidegasse. During the peak season, countless people crowd this rather narrow alley, making quick progress hardly possible. If you just want to stroll through the old town, you should prepare yourself in advance that you are simply not alone in this street with many shops. So slow down and enjoy the hustle and bustle instead of getting annoyed by the "brakes".
At Getreidegasse 9 is also Mozart's birthplace, where the world-famous composer was born on January 27, 1756. Today, the former family residence is a museum containing documents and musical instruments of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Further information about Mozart's birthplace can be found on the website of the Tourist Information Salzburg.
Over Judengasse to Mozartplatz
We now stroll slightly to the right through the Getreidegasse and then walk back the same way towards Judengasse.
At the end of Judengasse you reach over Waagplatz to Mozartplatz, where the Kaffee Glockenspiel is located. The Kaffee Glockenspiel was originally a stable, then an iron trade business, and only became a café in 1925.
Within sight is, besides the Mozart statue, the Residenzplatz, with its very impressive Residence Fountain, and from where you can also visit the cathedral with the cathedral museum. In the Residence Gallery, art lovers can admire European painting from the 16th to 19th century, including works by the Dutch Rembrandt and Rubens and many Austrian painters of that period. Special exhibitions are also regularly offered.
Over Festungsgasse to Mönchsberg
Next, continue over Domplatz and Kapitelplatz to Festungsgasse, from where the fortress railway leads up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The ride with the fortress railway is free as part of the SalzburgerLand CARD. Otherwise, you can buy suitable tickets on site or cheaper online.
You can also easily reach the fortress on foot in about 10 to 15 minutes. More information about Salzburg's landmark can be found in Horst Gassner's excursion description for the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Over Mönchsberg to Augustinerbräu Mülln
If you follow the signpost towards Schloss Mönchstein and keep on the side of the Mönchsberg facing the Salzach river, you can enjoy wonderful views over the city of Salzburg, especially the panorama at dawn and sunset is really fascinating. After the Kapuzinerberg, you now know the second of Salzburg's city mountains!
Passing by Müllner Church, you finally arrive at the Augustinerbräu Mülln, which invites you to take a longer break.
Beer has been brewed at Augustinerbräu since 1621. With over 5,000 m2, Augustinerbräu is the largest beer pub in Austria. Per year, over 1.2 million (!) liters of beer are served here.
In summer, it is very busy here, but in the huge and unique beer garden, you can almost always find a small spot. Moving indoors on hot summer days might be an option, but I would always prefer the beer garden. By the way: you can bring your own food into the beer garden! In which other restaurant is this allowed?
Over Salzachgasse to the bank of the Salzach, over Müllnersteg to Mirabell Palace
After a hearty liver cheese snack with freshly sliced horseradish and beer in the splendid beer garden of Müllnerbräu, you can continue revitalized.
Over Lindhofstraße (passing on the right of the regional hospital) you reach through Salzachgasse to the old town side bank of the Salzach. Here you first keep to the right in the direction of Staatsbrücke before crossing Müllnersteg to the other side of the main river of the festival city.
After crossing Schwarzstraße using the pedestrian crossing, the Mirabell Garden with Mirabell Palace is on the right hand side, a top sight. Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. Here locals and foreign guests get married.
The Mirabell Garden was designed in its current form in 1690 and was also a setting in the world-famous musical "The Sound of Music". The view over Mirabell Garden towards the fortress is truly unique.
Over Makartplatz back to the starting point
After you have let your soul dangle in the Mirabell Garden for a sufficient amount of time, leave it in the direction of the fortress.
From here, you go left over Makartplatz, then right through Dreifaltigkeitsgasse in the direction of Linzergasse. Through Linzergasse you then return to the starting point of this circular route.
