Bellagio is located at the tip of the peninsula where Lake Como splits into two branches. Our tour begins on the lakeside promenade and first leads along the shore to the gardens of Villa Melzi. The neoclassical complex was built between 1810 and 1815 according to plans by Giocondo Albertolli; the park features sculptures from various eras set among old trees, azaleas, and rhododendrons. Back in the town center, we head up Via Roma to the Basilica di San Giacomo, a three-nave Romanesque church dating from around 1100, built by master builders from the Como area. A few steps further on, we reach Piazza della Chiesa with the tower of the town’s former fortifications. Crossing the northern headland, we reach Punta Spartivento, where the view opens up to the three arms of the lake. The tour concludes with the cobblestone stairways of the historic center.
