The ascent through the old town to the picturesque Citadel in CalviPhoto: Oliver Lair, Outdooractive Premium
The port city of Calvi in the northwest of Corsica is not only a visual gem but also offers historically significant buildings and impressive sights. On this small city walk, we have tried to combine the most interesting and at the same time most beautiful views of the quaint town in a varied circular route. Numerous highlights await, such as the majestic citadel, the beautiful old town, the governor's palace, the picturesque marina, and unique views from the fortress walls over the Bay of Calvi and the azure Mediterranean Sea.
We start our circular route at the parking lot next to Av de L`Uruguay, below the citadel. From the eastern end of the parking lot, go down steps towards the lower town into Rue Georges Clemenceau and straight into Rue Joffre to the busy harbor (marina). A visit to the tourist information office is recommended here. Along the harbor promenade with numerous inviting cafes and restaurants, it is now possible to stroll comfortably via the Quai Landry back towards the citadel, possibly with a visit to the romantically appearing pink-domed church Sainte-Marie-Majeure. Back in the upper town, the highlight is now on the agenda, the visit of the citadel built on a mighty granite promontory. The large forecourt at the entrance to the fortress is named after Christopher Columbus, as Calvi also claims to be the birthplace of the legendary discoverer.
