From Lenggries over the Geierstein to the Fockenstein, past the Neuhüttenalm to the Ochsenkamp and Spitzkamp, continuing to the Seekarkreuz and after a short rest at the Lenggrieser Hütte back to Lenggries via the Grasleiten ridge.
This is without exaggeration one of the most rewarding circular routes over the lower peaks of the Bavarian Prealps, although with 23 kilometers in length and 1,600 meters of elevation gain, quite demanding.

After warming up (from Lenggries to Hohenburg), it immediately goes steeply up through the shady mountain forest to the Geierstein (1491m), which can be reached in 1-2 hours – we took about 1:30 h. The highest point is slightly east of the cross summit; the view is somewhat restricted by a few trees, but the surprisingly rocky summit structure provides enough excitement.
The descent to the northeast is somewhat rough; caution is advisable when wet, but the meadow in the saddle (1340 m) between Schwarzwand and Geierstein is reached quickly, where our path to the Fockenstein branches off to the right (signpost). We pass a stream with drinking water quality and cross a scree cirque before reaching a forest road, which we follow to the left (east direction, signpost).
After about 600 meters, there is a junction where a cart track branches left to the Fockenstein. Initially with a pleasant slope, soon becoming a trail going straight up the slope to the alpine meadows around our second summit, the Fockenstein (1564 m). The time required for this section is about 1 hour.
From the Fockenstein, it goes steeply and rocky downhill to the east towards the Aueralm. At a barbed wire fence below the official path, a well-visible trail begins which first leads east and then west to the alpine meadow of the Neuhüttenalm. From here, off-path down the grassy slope to the alm, where there's always well-chilled drinks and sometimes homemade cakes. A rest here is mandatory!
Afterwards, we first walk a stretch of the gravel road towards the Hirschtalsattel; it goes slightly uphill and shortly before the saddle back down. The last hairpin can be shortened via a trail.
Now comes the steep section to the Ochsenkamp (1594 m), reached after about 1.5 hours (from Fockenstein). Then we cross the ridge to the Spitzkamp (1604 m), which offers some not quite easy climbing spots, circle around the Brandkopf (why actually? already tired?), and walk or splash (depending on conditions, everything was dry this time) up the grassy slope to the Seekarkreuz (1601 m) (1 hour from Ochsenkamp).
Now it’s slowly time for an isotonic cold drink, so quickly down the comfortable path to the Lenggrieser Hütte, where a great selection is available for every taste. Inside it was buzzing today, with brass music and numerous hearty drinkers in high spirits; so we preferred to stay outside on the terrace with the dogs.
Previously, most would descend from the Lenggrieser Hütte via the Grasleitensteig, which is quite rustic leading to the pasture meadows above Mühlbach, but since a roughly 700-meter section has been overbuilt by a dreadful forest road, many hikers and we seek a new way, and what could be more beautiful than the one along the ridge over the Grasleitenkopf (1433 m) and the Grasleitenstein (1269 m) down to Mühlbach. There is still a small difficulty here because to avoid walking through a farmer's yard down in Mühlbach, we exceptionally respect his rustic and actually unjustified path closure just under 800 meters altitude and detour on the parallel path to the left, which takes us with only a small detour and without provocation to the village. Time required for this about 1:30 h.
From Mühlbach, it is not far to the starting point, depending on the time of day you can still walk a stretch through the forest past Hohenburg and Kalvarienberg or return via the Hohenburg and Karwendel road to the parking lot in Lenggries. By the way, the ice cream at the local ice cream shop tastes excellent!
