The King Dachstein Trail is one of the most impressive trail running adventures in the Alps. Divided into four varied daily stages, the route circles the mighty Dachstein massif and connects the most spectacular landscapes of the Salzburg region, the Salzkammergut, and Styria. The journey starts and finishes in Filzmoos, a renowned outdoor destination nestled in the stunning mountain scenery at the foot of the Dachstein.

The first stage leads via the Hofpürgl Hut, Zwieselalm, and Herrenweg trail to Gosau. From there, the route continues over the historic Salt Mountain to Hallstatt and through the picturesque Koppental Valley to Bad Aussee. Challenging climbs and breathtaking panoramic views accompany runners on their way to Stoderzinken, before the trail follows the famous Ramsau High Trail beneath the towering Dachstein South Face. For those seeking a more alpine experience, an alternative route follows the Dachstein Circuit Trail across the glacier. The final stage returns to Filzmoos via Tor, Sulzenhals, Rinderfeld, Kaserboden, and the Hofalmen mountain pastures.

In total, participants cover around 145 kilometres and more than 7,000 metres of elevation gain, creating a truly unforgettable trail running experience for ambitious mountain athletes.

    Safety information

    • During the tour around the Dachstein, you will mostly be in high alpine terrain. Appropriate trail running equipment and endurance are therefore prerequisites.
    • Your route will be immortalized by your entry in every hut logbook in the Dachstein mountains.
    • The paths are well signposted, but markings can be obscured by remaining snow. Therefore, it is essential that you carry routing maps.
    • Accompaniment by an experienced guide on request!
    • Please note that the tour is weather dependent! Alternative trails, use of cable cars, and train or bus (payable locally) are always possible.
    • Along the route, several main roads and smaller side roads must be crossed. Please take extra care.

    Tips and suggestions

Due to the risk of injury, running in regular road shoes is not recommended.

A few tips to make your run more enjoyable:

    •  Leave everyday stress behind and enjoy exercising in the fresh air and beautiful natural surroundings.
    • Reach your goal step by step! Training should match your fitness level, age, and running distance. Increase mileage gradually.
    • Pay attention to proper running technique and an ideal breathing rhythm.
    • Running should be fun! Monotony is the beginning of the end, so keep varying your route, distance, and intensity.
    • Light stretching before training, but especially after running, helps keep muscles flexible and less prone to injury.
    • Cool down with an easy jog or walk. Every workout should be followed by recovery — the harder the effort, the longer the recovery time needed.
    • Nutrition tip: Avoid solid food about 2 hours before running, but drink plenty of fluids (fresh spring water) before and during your run. After running, replenish carbohydrate stores with pasta, potatoes, grains, rice, and similar foods.
    • Clothing should wick sweat away from the body and be breathable. Proper running shoes should provide an optimal fit (with about a finger’s width of space at the front), cushioning, stability, natural rolling motion, and breathability.

Please respect local guidelines for the protection of nature.Kompass / Freitag und Bernt / Alpine Club map (AV map)
