The Westwallweg leads you along the course of the Westwall right through the picturesque nature of the Bad Bergzaberner Land. It connects the Westwall fortifications in two shorter segments around the villages of Niederotterbach and Steinfeld and a approx. 12 km long section around Oberotterbach. The route, without any significant inclines, is suitable for walking and cycling. On your way you will see: remains of fortifications such as bunkers of different types and sizes, water-filled tank ditches in the plains and dry tank ditches in the forest positions, tank obstacles at various stages of development, and defensive systems. Over 30 display panels provide carefully researched and clearly prepared information.

The panels describe and illustrate various aspects of Westwall history.
Overview panels: at the parking lots you will find information about the Westwall construction in general and the Otterbach section. Additional information combines along the route to form a comprehensive overall picture.
Local panels: They show the history of the villages Niederotterbach, Oberotterbach, Steinfeld, Böllenborn-Reisdorf and Dörrenbach in the Westwall area and describe the impact of the Westwall construction and war on the inhabitants.
Object panels: They explain bunker installations, defensive systems, military buildings, but also inform about places as scenes of specific events, e.g. the breakthrough of the Americans in 1945 or the location of a minefield. They also address the function of the former military buildings for the endangered flora and fauna.
For quick orientation the panels are color-coded by themes:
Blue: Contributions deal with military technology and fortress construction history.
Green: Indicates information about plant and animal life.
Ochre: Marks eyewitness reports.
Contemporary pictures, reconstruction animations and documents illustrate the text; animals and plants living in the bunker remains are shown. The research and content preparation of the panels was done with great care, textual explanations and illustrations pose no problem even for children and are excellent for school classes as part of clear teaching.

General advice:
Especially in autumn, note that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes on the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall or branches break off. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You must expect this type of path impairment when hiking. If you consider certain sections of paths impassable, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting clubs on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. Should you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please observe the instructions for your own safety.
