Short hike with two very different sections – one half in the valley, the other on the Jura ridge northwest of Muggendorf, known as the Heinrich-Uhl high path, which here coincides with the course of the Frankenweg.

Muggendorf is the traditional tourist center of the Franconian Switzerland, located directly on the Wiesent river in the eponymous romantic valley. From afar, the special location of this village in the valley is striking, but also with houses nestled against the Jura slopes, which already rise steeply and increasingly steeper from the upper market.

This hiking round is also divided in the same way – it does not matter if you first take the cozy valley trail or – to really warm up – immediately climb the steep Schmiedsberg. In our description, we go counterclockwise, first taking the valley path and always have our Muggendorf directly in view above and below us during the descent.

Surefootedness is required on the high path – but the trail is generally always well passable, as it is the quality hiking trail “Frankenweg” that you walk here.

The viewpoints close to the high path are definitely recommended – Neideck view, Brünhildenstein, Koppenburg – always a new perspective, a picturesque view of the meandering Wiesent valley.

    Author’s recommendation

The route mostly runs on narrow, partly steep and root-covered forest paths → appropriate equipment and surefootedness required (especially in wet conditions)!

How you start doesn’t matter – if you stay in the valley first and then take the long descent to Muggendorf last, you have about half the height on asphalt (Schmiedsberg), which is possibly the easier option going downhill. Also, the view is always directed towards the Wiesent valley with Muggendorf – surely a good motivation for the soon-to-be-earned reward at a local gastronomic establishment :)

    Roadbook

We start our gorge-and-cave route at the Wiesent promenade – the small bridge at the eponymous tavern is centrally located and can be reached from the parking lot at the Nature Park information center in three minutes. From here, we follow the green cross marking towards Streitberg – initially on the bike and footpath leading out of town along the federal road. At the street junction to the forest swimming pool (unfortunately closed since 2015) we cross the B470 and follow this signpost. In front of the small outdoor pool there is – well hidden – a beautifully maintained Kneipp facility, whose fresh spring water is highly recommended, not only on a hot summer day.

Keeping left, we leave the asphalt at the last house of Muggendorf and immerse ourselves in the colorful mixed forest, heading towards “Langes Tal” and Streitberg, continuing to follow the green cross. The forest road at the height of the hamlet of Wöhr (below on the B470) is crossed for about 50 meters until our small forest path leads us further into or along the forest edge to the distinctive valley cut between Muggendorf and Streitberg – the “Langes Tal.” Beautiful views repeatedly open up to the high opposite Neideck ruin – past a small fish pond, we cross the small brook of Langes Tal on a footbridge (slippery!) and then immediately turn right, ascending to the forest road that runs through the entire Langes Tal.

We now leave our green cross marking and pay attention to the vertical red marking at the next fork. This path – called the Heinrich-Uhl-Weg – first runs diagonally along the slope, then in quite steep switchbacks through a primeval forest and rock landscape up to the Jura heights, where the next forest road and the first viewpoint with an impressive view of Neideck await us. Continuing with the vertical red marking, it soon goes again on narrow paths slightly up and down in the forest, passing very close to a genuine Alpenverein hut until reaching the forest road that leads from Wöhr up to Neudorf. Here we first go slightly uphill to the left, then after 100 meters continue right on our “Heinrich-Uhl forest path,” which first goes gently downhill, then after a small curve right, then steeply upwards again on the left. If it is slippery after rainy days, the railing (installed by FSV Muggendorf) is a very valuable help. Just before the highest point of this section, watch for the branch marked “Brünhildenstein,” three minutes to the rock plateau with a metal flag and a bench – and then back to the Uhl path.

After finally crossing this mountain ridge in the Muggendorf mountains, it goes quite steeply downhill, partly over roots – here too the possible risk of slipping has been mitigated by a railing and steps. At the end of this stepped descent, we have already arrived at Schmiedsberg, which goes straight down to Muggendorf. You might consider making a detour to the Rosenmüllershöhle cave 200 meters away (see signpost) first or continuing to the next viewpoint “Koppenburg” (five minutes from here) on the Uhl path – in this case, you could also add the gorge-cave round. But if that is enough, simply go down Schmiedsberg, where the asphalt begins with the first elevated houses, leading directly to the upper market, where only the agony of choice for the subsequent tavern visit awaits us (dining in Muggendorf;)

    Equipment

Normal hiking equipment, definitely shoes with grippy soles, poles highly recommended as help in possibly slippery terrain and on uphill sections.
