You can start the TrifelsErlebnisWeg at the tourist information at Meßplatz in the city of Annweiler or at Trifels Castle. On the 3.6 km long path, interesting information about the region's history in the Middle Ages awaits you, as well as picnic and play stations to make the hike varied. You will overcome 272 meters of altitude and need about 1 to 1.5 hours for the route. The path has a high proportion of paths and is not barrier-free or suitable for strollers.

WATCH OUT! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature

    • Always behave foresightedly, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the way.
    • Take care of nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
    • Remember a garbage bag for the way and take waste back home with you.
    • Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
    • For your own safety, observe all path closures, even on weekends.
    • Park only in designated parking spaces. Leave room for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
    • Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

    Safety information

The hiking trail has a high proportion of paths and is not barrier-free or suitable for strollers.

    General information:

Especially in autumn, note that leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may drop even afterwards. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you think certain sections are impassable for you, you should avoid them. Despite the "unmistakable" marking of the premium hiking trails, for safety reasons we always recommend carrying a suitable hiking map so that, for example, you can quickly reach a safe area in case of thunderstorms or emergencies.

    NOTICE:

We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you encounter closures or detours on site, please observe the notices for your own safety.

    Roadbook

From the City to the Castle

Here at Messplatz you will find the tourist information and can download the SÜWErlebnisApp via the “VG Hotspot”. An overview board explains everything else. The “Mönchsweg” marking shows you the way.

Off you go: From Messplatz follow the stream. Pass the Museum under the Trifels and go along Wassergasse to Stadtmühle. Here you cross the Queich and reach Rathausplatz through Mühlgasse. At the end of the square turn left into Hauptstraße. After a short stretch along Hauptstraße, go right uphill to Markwardanlage. After the pond you have to cross the street to the left. Now you have reached the hiking car park from which it goes uphill through the forest to Trifels Castle. Please remember, visiting Trifels Castle is subject to a charge.

From the Castle to the City

From Trifels first go down the path to Schlossäcker car park. With the marking Annweilerer Burgenweg or Mönchsweg, you will find the entry to the path down to Markwardanlage to the left of the Mönchsweg sign. Upon reaching the hiking car park, cross the street and continue along the pond to Burgstraße. Follow this down and you will meet Hauptstraße. Follow it to the left to Rathausplatz. Cross the square and reach Stadtmühle through the narrow Mühlgasse next to the beautiful timber-framed house. From here, follow the watercourse to the right. Pass through Wassergasse to the Museum under Trifels and continue through Schipkapass to Messplatz.  Tip: Between Schlossäcker car park and Annweiler am Trifels station, bus line 527 runs. Also refer to the info under Trifelsbus. Tip: The Annweilerer Burgenweg (7.5 km) is a nice extension if you want to turn the point-to-point route into a circular one. The hike starts at the hiking car park and leads through Bindersbacher Tal over the two sister ruins Anebos and Scharfenberg (Münz) to Trifels Castle and back to the car park.

    Equipment

For our hiking tours we recommend the following equipment as standard:

    • Sturdy footwear
    • Weather-appropriate clothing
    • Sun and rain protection
    • Sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always dining or shopping options available or open everywhere.
    • Although the paths are very well marked throughout, for safety reasons it is recommended to always carry a suitable hiking map so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of thunderstorms or emergencies.
