The Zavelstein Crocus Path
Zavelstein is well known for its crocus bloom. The wild crocus is actually native to the Mediterranean region and occurs only in a few locations north of the Alps. From early March, the warm spring sun attracts countless blossoms in all shades between blue-violet and white. Numerous stories and legends revolve around the origin of the wild crocus. It is suspected that Benjamin Buwinghausen from Wallmerode brought the crocus bulbs from a foreign trip around 1620 and planted them in the castle garden. From there, the spread of the crocus into the Zavelstein farm gardens began.
You can learn about the crocus bloom all year round on a walk through the nature reserve "Zavelsteiner Krokuswiesen." Visitors can find interesting facts about the crocus on seven signs and admire pictures of the crocus meadows in the different seasons in three "viewing boxes."
