The forests around Solothurn are home to numerous erratic boulders that the Rhone Glacier carried from the Valais Alps to the southern foot of the Jura during the last Ice Age. The larger stones, the megaliths, are especially impressive and full of mysteries. Some of these specimens were formerly used for astronomical observations, others for cultic-religious purposes. Benjamin Fässler, who has long been involved with the subject and has mapped hundreds of erratic boulders, is also the initiator of this "stone-rich" themed trail on the Jura side of the city, north of St. Niklaus in the forest of the Solothurn citizens' community. It is a project of the Stone Museum of the Association of Solothurn Stone Friends. The 13 commented stations present numerous surprising details about the astronomical and cultic significance of such stones for ancient cultures.
