Rafting experience path Legelbachtal (small loop) 2.1 km
Touristinformation Tal viTal - Verbandsgemeinde Lambrecht (Pfalz) Verified partner
This small loop leads from the "Alte Schmelz" hiking parking lot over the Nibelungen rock back to the parking lot.
Transporting wood by water was the most important economic sector in the region. The sophisticated system of timber rafting can be explored and experienced here. During the Bavarian period, all brooks were newly planned, although timber rafting had existed since the Middle Ages. From around 1820, the facilities were built of sandstone, which is why they are still preserved today. Most un-mortared stone blocks are so well processed and set that they are often still intact after 200 years.
Only with the railway, such as the Elmsteiner Kuckucksbähnel, did the rafting lose its importance from 1905. Before that, it supplied the timber-poor Rhine plain in times of timber shortage and provided people here with wages and bread. Elmstein experienced an economic upswing.
The accompanying path was laid out in three loops, so everyone can experience the Triftbach according to their condition. The "Rock King" accompanies the route in the form of an audio tour (the app for this - Trifterlebnis Legelbach - please download at home, as there is unfortunately no reception in the Legelbachtal) and tells of his hard work as a timber rafter.

Safety information
General information:
Especially in autumn, pay attention to the fact that fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees may still fall or branches may drop. Especially with adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You should expect such path disruptions when hiking. If you think certain sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting groups on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking paths are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a path closure or detour, please observe the signs for your own safety.
The paths are sometimes very narrow, so surefootedness is necessary.
Tips and suggestions
The audio file can be downloaded here: https://gfcc.de/trifterlebnis/index.html
Please download in advance, as reception is poor in the Elmsteiner Tal.
Please note: The rafting experience path is not suitable for strollers.
Roadbook
Just a note in advance. The route starts at the parking lot with information board 2. If you want to start at information board 1, you have to cross the main road (L499) via a small path from the parking lot. Once there, you will see an old information board about the rafting experience. We cross the small bridge and turn left onto the path. There is information board 1 (approx. 150m). Then it goes back to the hiking parking lot and information board 2.
We start our hike from the "Alte Schmelz" hiking parking lot. From the parking lot, you can already see information board 3, then you go up a few sandstone steps where the path leads us past the Altschmelzklause and information board 4. We continue along the "large Legelbach", past information boards 5 and 6. Under a Bollerplatz (shortly before information board 7) it goes a bit steeply up to the right. We follow the path that leads us above along the slope down to the road. We cross the road and hike up the path to the Nibelungen rock. There is a rest stop there. After a lengthy rest and exploration of the rock, we hike around the rock where a path then leads down the valley. On this 1 km section, the road must be crossed again at the end of the path to then follow the entrance path shortly after, where information board 8 is also located, back to the Altschmelzklause.
