The approximately 8.5 km long Celtic and Roman route is part of the themed hiking trails "Mysterious Time Signs." The exciting and varied hike provides interesting and mysterious insights into the past.
How did the Roman messaging system work? Clues to formerly existing signal towers were implemented in the model: there, the message transmission can be practically tried out. Who lived here before the Romans came? A look at the Donnersberg, with its still impressive circular rampart, gives information. The Romans themselves left their traces: wall remains in the forest near Dreher Kopf date from the 4th century. Via Daubenbornerhof, an ancient traffic junction, it goes down to the former Burg Breidenborn: completely gone, only the field name and some old boundary stones recall the water castle from the time of Emperor Barbarossa. Rare examples of Celtic burial mounds have been rebuilt in the forest sections Zollstock and Daubenborner Heide.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for a considerate coexistence in nature
- Always behave thoughtfully, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on your way.
- Respect nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Remember a trash bag for the way and take your waste back home.
- Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- For your own safety, observe all path closures, even on weekends.
- Only park in designated parking lots. Keep space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.
Author’s recommendation
At the junction at Daubenbornerhof, you can also switch to Monks' Trail 1 of the Mysterious Time Signs. Pay attention to the special markings on the lantern here. The trail goes uphill to Hochspeyer.

DaubenbornerhofSafety information
General information:
Especially in autumn, you should be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rains, trees can still fall or branches can break off afterwards. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You should expect path impairments of this kind when hiking. If you think certain sections of the path are impassable for you, you should bypass them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. However, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.
Tips and suggestions
The hiking trail is on some sections on paved paths and is therefore also suitable for off-road strollers or a trip with a cart. The stroller should at least be off-road capable because the area at station 4 (Roman building) runs over a former hollow way.
Public transport
Take the train to Enkenbach-Alsenborn station. It is then a 17-minute walk to the starting point on Birkenstraße.
