Walk through one of the oldest cities of mankind
The Italian town of Matera can look back on a long history. Already in the Neolithic period, people settled here in caves, which still exist and can be visited today. Based on these testimonies, researchers agree that Matera is likely one of the oldest inhabited areas worldwide. The so-called Sassi di Matera were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. Our walk leads us along well-marked and frequently used, although rocky and partly steep paths from the opposite hill into the valley, then up into the old town of Matera and, alternating uphill and downhill, past the Sassi back to the starting point.
