A circular hiking trail between Bad Frankenhausen and Barbarossa Cave, which can be hiked in three different distances
The Südkyffhäuser Geopath introduces you to the Mediterranean-like Zechstein landscape of the Südkyffhäuser. Along the way, you’ll encounter unexpected questions and discover surprising answers. Can rocks stink, or can you bake bread out of plaster? Information boards along the trail invite you to smell and touch the exhibits.
Author’s recommendation
If you’d like, you can follow the country road briefly eastward at Rottleben, where the hiking trail meets the road. 100 meters past the parking lot, a dirt road leads north. After 350 meters, this road takes you to the Prinzenhöhle. To bypass the steep slope, take the upper fork and leave it at the point where it branches off to the east (be careful, as the first 4 meters are steep and slippery).
The Prinzenhöhle is open to the public at all times. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot native bat species and hibernating butterflies here (please do not disturb them).

As of early December 2024, the hiking trail is detoured at the "Weiße Küche" due to fallen trees. The trail currently runs through the Hornissental valley.

Roadbook
From the Am Höheneck trail in Bad Frankenhausen, you reach the Nature Park Station via a chestnut-lined avenue on the Kyffhäuser Trail. To reach the rocky edge of the Kattenburg, turn west at the “Weiße Küche” junction. From there, the hiking trail continues westward—including past the Eschenecke landmark—to the GeoTop Kammtal, from where it continues south. Through the floodplain with sweeping valley views, the trail leads you along the Kleine Wipper back to Bad Frankenhausen.
