To counteract the dryness on the Kaunerberg slope, a tunnel several kilometers long was dug to channel water from the Gallruth Glacier through the 12 km long hillside canal to irrigate the meadows in Kaunerberg, Kauns and Faggen.

During dry periods, the tunnel is closed because water is being channeled through it. Information at the Kaunertal info office
Roadbook
We start at Hirschenbad and follow the forest road to Falkaunsalm. We walk right directly past the alpine pasture and soon come to a fork. We keep right and walk over the alpine meadow, then through open woodland. Soon we reach the grazing area of Gallruthalm, where arnicas bloom in July. To the left is Peischlkopf and behind the Gallruth basin rise the small and large Dristkogel. From Gallruthalm we hike downhill past the desanding basin, along the water channel to the tunnel. We put on our jackets and light our torches before setting off on the hike through the narrow tunnel. Soon we hear loud rushing water when a brook flows in at the tunnel window. Remember to duck your heads, the tunnel gets lower at the end. After about 15 minutes, we have crossed the Gallruth Tunnel and now hike back along the water channel to the parking lot.
