Vorderweidenthal – high plateau – high forest – road
along and through Oberschlettenbach – Bühlhof – Budelstein - Vorderweidenthal
A place of peace surrounded by castles and rocks in the middle of the Palatinate Forest. A dream arena for hikers, a paradise for climbers, and terrain for mountain bikers. But also an open history book with exciting chapters about Staufer knights, kings and dukes who built their castles here.
You can eat well at the 'Bethof' - as well as in the beer garden of the 'Cramer Haus', below the Lindelbrunn castle ruins - or in the 'Golden Lamb' in the middle of the village: three inns, each with guest rooms – even though Vorderweidenthal in the Wasgau has less than 700 inhabitants! For decades, hikers and pension guests have been coming to the valley in the Palatinate Forest near the border with France.
In the past, Vorderweidenthal - with connecting roads to Dahn, Annweiler, and Bad Bergzabern - was also a commercial and shopping center. Almost only the 'corner shop' remains, which is well adapted to weekend vacationers and campers. Agriculture hardly plays any role anymore: nevertheless, eggs, honey or potatoes 'directly from the farm' still remind us that Vorderweidenthal used to be a farming village.
ATTENTION! – Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
Always behave foresightedly, kindly and considerately toward everyone you meet on the way.
Respect nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
Think of a trash bag for the way and take your rubbish home with you.
Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
For your own safety, observe all trail closures, even on weekends.
Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
Please give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

In general:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves can conceal unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall or branches may fall afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect these kinds of path impairments if you go hiking. If you think certain sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting groups on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly come across a trail closure or detour, please observe the instructions for your own safety.
Roadbook
Vorderweidenthal is left toward Rödelstein via a concrete path to the high plateau 'Kirchheld'. With a magnificent view of the climbing rock and across the Wasgau, it goes into the high forest toward Hahnenhof. From there along the lightly traveled road through Oberschlettenbach to the namesake of the path, the Bühlhof tavern. Past the Löffelsberg and by Budelstein, it goes back to the starting point.
The Bühlhof tavern, with its Palatinate specialties, serves as a refreshment stop on this day route. The 100-year-old lime tree avenue in front of Oberschlettenbach as well as the wonderful panoramic view from Löffelsberg – including Budelstein, Berwartstein castle, or the Drachenfels – reward the hiker. Finally, a refreshment at the Kneipp water treading pool at the entrance to Vorderweidenthal is worthwhile.
