The route begins at the light railway stop in Glossen. From here, the path leads along Wachtelberg to Kemmlitz and stops at the Colditz shafts. Kaolin was mined underground at this location until 1950. In the vicinity of Kemmlitz there are also remains of kaolin mining in the form of the open pits "Karl Marx" and the remainder pit "Frieden," which were operated until 1990 and 1972, respectively.
The path continues past the fossilized Börtewitz lake to the village of the same name. Within the Porphyrland Geopark, the fossilized lake holds a special position. As the only fossil site in the Geopark, it serves as a kind of window into the time about 290 million years ago.
From here, the route leads via Querbitzsch and Pommlitz back to Glossen. This final section passes the kaolin mining site "Glückauf" north of Börtewitz, which closed in 1974, and the Döllnitz spring in Querbitzsch.
Author’s recommendation
Be sure to combine the hike with a ride on the Döllnitzbahn to the "Kaolin Adventure World" in the Geoportal of the Porphyrland Geopark.
Note for cyclists: The route is continuously passable, between Pommlitz and Glossen it is challenging.
