The area is unique in its bird and natural diversity as well as its astonishing abundance of species. Besides many water birds such as mallards and pochards, coots and little grebes, swallows and swifts can also be observed due to the nearby settlement area. On the gravel banks of the Lech, specially adapted breeding bird species such as the riverbank sandpiper or little ringed plover feel particularly comfortable.
Bird Observation Tower
It is almost 18 meters high, the bird observation tower in the Pflach floodplain.
The wooden giant offers nature lovers and amateur ornithologists interesting insights into the way of life of the feathered inhabitants of the floodplain. Along with the observation tower, there is also a bird experience trail. We experience birds mainly through sight and hearing. The bird experience trail therefore invites you to:
LOOK: From the observation tower and the dams, the patient observer can watch most species.
HEAR: The attentive nature lover will receive many sound impressions in bushes and reeds, along the Lech and at the pond. The voices of 30 important species can also be accessed digitally at the five theme stations. However, you have to provide the energy yourself. The motto is: "Crank - Listen - Enjoy - Learn".
GRASP: On 5 stations, striking bird shapes of the main habitats are presented in pictures and sound and provide insights into their survival tricks and the special features of the respective habitats.
TEST and PLAY: Test your knowledge and memory playfully at your own bird guessing board (in the tower) and at the five theme stations (bird calls quiz), where you can try to whistle the birds according to your ability.

After gaining a good overview by climbing the observation tower, you walk comfortably along the gravel path through the floodplain area to the wild Lech river with its gravel banks and specialized breeding birds.
Following the river course, a small footpath winds through the thicket of the floodplain forest, between grey alders and willows, past colorful Lech stones and large driftwood deposits. Emerging from the bushes, you reach a clearing with a gravel path. Here you turn away from the Lech and follow the gravel path to the Archbach canal. From here, the route overlaps with the bird experience trail. Interactive bird call stations now accompany the path.
At the Archbach canal, turn right and follow it upstream until you reach the flood protection dam. From the dam, you have a beautiful view of the shallow water area, impressively covered with tussock sedges, cattails, reeds, water horsetail and bulrushes, and numerous water birds. From here, you can soon spot the bird observation tower, which marks the end of the round.
