A place of peace surrounded by castles and rocks in the middle of the Palatinate Forest. A dream arena for hikers, an Eldorado for climbers and terrain for mountain bikers. But also an open history book with exciting chapters about Staufer knights, kings, and dukes who built their castles here.
At the "Bethof" you can enjoy good food – as well as in the beer garden of the "Cramer Haus" below the Lindelbrunn castle ruins – or at the "Golden Lamb" in the middle of town: three inns, each with guest beds – and yet Vorderweidenthal in the Wasgau has fewer than 700 inhabitants! For decades hikers and boarding guests have been coming to the valley in the Palatinate Forest near the French border.
Formerly, Vorderweidenthal – connected by roads to Dahn, Annweiler, and Bad Bergzabern – was also a trade and shopping center. Almost all that remains is the "Tante-Emma-Laden" (small local store), catering well to weekend holidaymakers and campers. Agriculture plays hardly any role anymore: nonetheless, eggs, honey or potatoes "direct from the farm" still remind that Vorderweidenthal was formerly a farming village.
PLEASE NOTE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
Always behave cautiously, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on your way.
Respect nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
Remember to bring a garbage bag for the way and take your rubbish back home.
Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
For your own safety, observe all path closures, even on weekends.
Only park in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

Safety information

General information:
Particularly in autumn, pay attention to the fact that leaves lying on the ground can cover uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees can still fall or branches drop afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in some areas. You must expect these kinds of path impairments when hiking. If you think certain sections are impassable for you, you should detour around them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking paths are closed and we might not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a path closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.
Roadbook
Vorderweidenthal is left along the forest edge behind the cemetery. Through coniferous forests via the "Raubritterradweg" (Robber Knight Cycle Path) towards Lauterschwan and a short ascent through high forest leads to the Natufreundehaus Bethof. The route continues through a weekend area and a long meadow valley to the sports field. From there, the path goes into the new residential area and further to the town center.
The Naturfreundehaus Bethof with the adjoining campground, as well as beer garden and playground, serves as an ideal place to stop with its regional German cuisine. As a hiking hostel it offers suitable overnight accommodations. At the town exit of Vorderweidenthal, a visit to the well-maintained memorial cemetery in remembrance of the dead of both world wars is worthwhile.

Equipment
For our hiking routes we recommend the following equipment as standard:
Sturdy footwear
Clothing adapted to the weather
Sun and rain protection
Sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop available or open.
Even though the paths are consistently well marked, for safety reasons it is advisable to always carry a suitable hiking map, so that for example in case of a thunderstorm or emergency you can quickly find a safe area.
