Around Deister, Süntel, Nesselberg, and Osterwald, on the threshold of the North German Plain, there was already a productive industrial area in pre-industrial times, favored by the available mineral resources. Coal mines, sand and limestone quarries, and saltworks provided jobs and were also in the focus of the regional ruler due to their economic significance.

A network of footpaths and driveways covered the region, on which goods and materials were transported and people traveled to their workplaces, the mines, and quarries. Today, the Bergmannsweg offers an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the past. It passes through Altenhagen, Brünnighausen, Dörpe, and Salzburg and connects several sections that follow historical paths. The route is continuously marked. Because of the varied landscape and panoramic views, hiking on the Bergmannsweg is a very special experience.

    Author’s recommendation

The visitor mine Hüttenstollen is worth a trip. Simply follow Steigerbrinkstraße in Osterwald, and you will come directly to the mine.
