The observation hut north of the fire station in Eich offers you a first view of the aquatic habitat and reed beds of the "Eich-Gimbsheimer Altrhein". The approximately 300 ha of silting reed beds are among the largest contiguous reed stands in southwest Germany. These are breeding areas for rare and specialized bird species such as the marsh warbler, thrush and reed warblers, marsh harrier, water rail, bluethroat, and penduline tit, which depend on reed areas. Many endangered dragonfly and amphibian species, such as the spotted emerald dragonfly, the most important occurrence of the garlic toad in Rheinhessen, and the crested newt have been documented in the area. Botanical specialties include the presence of the shining spurge and the beds of the bulrush reed cutting, a plant community of European significance.
From the observation tower at Altrheinsee you get a wide view of the large gravel lake and unexcavated residual areas of the former Altrhein with the reed area "Meerwasser". From here, you can regularly observe ducks, geese, and divers. In the reed bed "Meerwasser," besides many reed species, species of the hardwood floodplain, such as the black kite, can also be observed.
The path repeatedly passes relics of the former Altrhein landscape with reed beds, shallow water areas, and floodplain forests. On the old railway embankment, you move right through the Altrhein. Especially here, you can hear and see many typical bird species of the reed area.
