Short excursion, just beyond the saddle of Passo Coe, in the wide grazing area of Malga Melegna. It starts from Base Tuono, a museum setup (open from April to October) that bears witness to the former NATO missile base 'Malga Zonta - Monte Toraro', active from 1964 to 1977. The historical suggestions, in this case from the Cold War, meet here the beauty of the surrounding territory, typically alpine.

We are in an area located between 1500 and 1600 m in altitude, facing north, usually heavily snow-covered. The excursion follows the forest road that from the Malga Zonta Shrine (a remembrance of the Nazi massacre on August 12, 1944) climbs towards the summit of Monte Maggio. But we turn towards Malga Melegna to then return, in a fun descent, to the starting point.

As you can imagine, the passability of trails in a mountain environment is closely linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before setting out, check the condition of the route by contacting the managers of the lodges along your route, alpine guides, natural park visitor centers, and tourist offices.Roadbook
From the parking lot at Lake Coe, follow the signs for Base Tuono. But, upon reaching the access road to the Base (in winter only visitable from the outside), we turn left and follow the road that leads to Malga Melegna and the top of Monte Maggio. Between pastures and fir groves, we reach the point where you turn towards the malga. We then turn right and shortly afterward reach the rural structure, closed for winter rest. We continue through the snow-covered pasture and, on a moderate descent, reach the Base and, a little lower, the point from which we started.
