If the snow conditions allow, tours near cities are very popular. This also applies to Knittelfeld's local mountain. The Steinplan can be accessed from many sides; we hike it on a quieter route from the north. The gently shaped landscape with its forest and meadow areas and the farms nestled within is perfect for snowshoe hiking. When there is too much snow at higher elevations in midwinter, this "avalanche-safe" tour is a nice alternative.
From the starting point in Rösslergarben, we follow the road until we see a no-driving sign at a sharp left curve. At this curve, we walk uphill to the right along the ditch. The forest road ascends steadily until after about 1 km, we cross a small brook on the left. Immediately after, we turn right onto a wider forest road and at the next intersection, we turn left to reach the Watzenbacherhütte, 1212 m. The open areas around the farm offer views towards the Seckauer Alps. At the next intersection, we turn right onto the forest road running mostly through the forest and pass a weekend house (Rachau 252) until we spot a clearing with a solitary beech tree on the left of the path. The path continues straight to the first marker or signpost. We follow the forest road to the right and shortly after reach the open meadows surrounding the Jostbauerhütte, 1361 m, from where we have a wonderful view of the Hochschwab massif in the northeast and the gentle peaks of the Gleinalpe. The forest
