The Saun is an exceptional lookout mountain above Sterzing. The ascent is quite demanding.
Route by Gilbert Holzmann. A few meters behind Braunhof are the signs “Brandtner Alm – Saun” (Mark. 3, 6). Follow the field-forest path ascending to the right for about 15–20 minutes. Where the path forks – a signpost shows the way to Saun – turn sharply to the right (Mark. 6). Follow the old trail marking and after a few steps you reach a meadow area with 2 old hay huts. Proceed relatively steeply uphill, roughly following the signs “Kaserwald – mountain meadows”. Halfway up there is another hay alpine hut with a nice terrace for a cozy rest. Continue through the increasingly thinning forest and more open terrain to the summit of Saun. Markings are mostly no longer visible, but the path is clear. If the snow cover is not very stable, keep away from steeper slopes and finally cross over the ridge to the cross. Almost unexpectedly free is the view of the Pfunderer Mountains, Dolomites, Sarntal Alps, Texel group, Ötztal and Stubai Alps all around, and far below in the Wipptal
