ASCENT: From the parking lot (~395 m) go through the barrier and follow the forest road eastwards in the woods. Keep left, then right, and after a left hairpin turn continue ascending to the right. On the ridge at about 600 m turn right and follow the path with small ups and downs. We reach the north summit at 610 m and the Drei-Buchen-Kreuz (604 m). Turn right here, pass through a small hollow and at the fork continue straight. Soon you reach the Pfenningberg 616 m with a large cross. A few steps away there is a view over Linz looking towards the Koglerauer Spitz 685 m, (<1 hour and 255 m elevation gain).
DESCENT: Walk a few meters east and then turn right on the marked hiking trail southwards down to the forest road at ~505 m. Open area, barrier, information board. Here turn left and follow the paved forest road gently downhill, open to the south with good views. Pass by a kind of forester’s house and into the woods. A few meters of ups and downs to a fork with a yellow signpost. We take the right, descend a little (475 m), at the junction ascend straight and then right up to the Kogel 502 m. Return on the ascent route on an easy trail.
For individualists: follow a clearing westwards, steeply down through dense beech young forest which is somewhat strenuous, down to a forest road at about 465 m. Follow this briefly to the right and at a memorial cross turn left to a small brook in a ditch. First follow left, then right shortly alongside it, then ascend gently through the forest up to the known forest road (480 m). Follow this left uphill to the known upper parking lot, where the marked trail to Pfenningberg also leads. We follow the road descending, after a hairpin turn continue downwards. We pass the start of a kind of hunting path at ~455 m and immediately reach the farm at 435 m. Continue on the road through a small hollow (the Pimes farm is on the right) and soon reach our small parking lot (395 m). 30 m elevation loss and about 1 hour walking time.
Total: 285 m elevation gain and less than 2 hours walking time over 5.7 km.
