Snowshoe hike on a well-frequented and easy mountain up to the summit if you follow the normal route that is groomed from Fonti di Rabbi up to Malga Monte Sole Alta (the related parking is about 700 meters before that of this outing).

However, there are many possible variants (mostly followed by ski mountaineers), and the route we followed today can be defined as medium difficulty.

It is medium-rated due to the steep final descent in the forest only with ABUNDANT AND PERFECT SNOW as today, otherwise it can become complicated: to be well assessed with snowshoes.

Thus, the maximum difficulty rating “WT3” is valid if … one does not exaggerate the descent variants.

In the “Directions to follow” sheet I include my impressions of the day for this version of the excursion.

    Safety information

This snowshoe excursion – considering the development and exposures of the route – requires careful assessment of the snowpack risk level for the chosen day.

It is advisable to take into account the following:

    • “Learn by heart” the avalanche snow bulletin.
    • In my opinion, it is not enough to look at it the day before, but it should be checked every day throughout the winter season to properly understand the evolution of the snowpack.
    • At least one experienced person in the group who also knows the type of ground under the snow to better judge local situations.
    • Granted that a book can never replace a course held by professionals, my favorite on snow-avalanche topics is: “SNOW Compendium of Snow Science” by Renato Cresta – Mulatero editor.
    • Excellent for risk reduction techniques is: “AVALANCHES – How to reduce risk” by Philippe Descamps and Olivier Moret – VERSANTE SUD EDITIONS.
    • From another book, I report a phrase always to keep in mind: “Events are often attributed to skill by chance; snow is stable 95 percent of the time, but we confuse the absence of avalanches with our ability to make good decisions”.
    • Snowshoes and skis are “two different worlds”: do not follow previous ski tracks uncritically.

    Carry all the necessary equipment.

    Premise

This route was traveled on November 30, 2019, and all subsequent observations and considerations apply fully only for that day.

    ↓

From the departure of the Al Plan parking area everything is very easy on small roads up to Malga Fratte Bassa.

Then, ignoring the forest road, take the path to Malga Fratte Alta: it is always quite wide and easy without steep slopes, but there are – in some short exposed traverses – small accumulations of collapsed snow that require some attention during the passage.

From Malga Fratte Alta, the route followed by ski mountaineers continues straight towards the summit of Monte Sole, while to the left there is a comfortable flat path that leads to the junction with the groomed road climbing from Fonti di Rabbi to Malga Monte Sole Alta.

From the junction point, it is very easy to reach the hut and then cross quite comfortable slopes (if the snow is good) up to the summit: the summit of Monte Sole is, in fact, a small elevation on a ridge that continues higher.

For the descent from Malga Monte Sole Alta, after a first stretch on the groomed road and given the perfect snow, today (as written in the "Summary" sheet) a big cut through the forest down to the bottom of Val Cercen.

Finally, a detour to the well-marked Suspension Bridge with a view of the Ragaiolo Waterfall, with the well-marked and twisty final connecting path where you have to remove the snowshoes.
