The vast Jufplaun plateau stretches between Piz Daint to the east, Munt Buffalora to the west, and Serraglio to the south. A snowshoe trail, well-trodden by many hikers, forms a loop across the plateau and opens up an ideal snowshoeing area; its vast expanse leaves plenty of room for your own variations on the route. The ascent to Jufplaun leads through romantic Swiss stone pine forests and past magnificent, ancient trees. The Swiss stone pine (known as “Arve” in Switzerland) is a resilient mountain tree, often shaped by wind and weather, that can reach a great age. Because it grows very slowly, it is often displaced by fast-growing larch or spruce trees, making large Swiss stone pine forests—such as the one on Buffalora—rather rare. This easy, leisurely hike is at its best in loose powder snow and bright sunshine.
