The hallmark of the Ahrntal is its tall, impressive glacier mountains with long and challenging ascents like Turnerkamp, Schwarzenstein, Großer Löffler, Dreiherrenspitze, and Rötspitze. Only a few peaks are accessible even in winter, and with snowshoes, the selection of not too steep routes is even smaller. One of these worthwhile destinations is the Henne in the Weißenbachtal, directly opposite the Turnerkamp. In older literature, the ascent to its summit via the Gornerjoch is described and rated as relatively easy. However, among ski tourers, a more direct and steeper route has been established for a long time, guaranteeing more downhill enjoyment. Nowadays, snowshoers also follow the tracks on this heavily traveled route, even though the steep slope up to the ridge height presents a real challenge for some snowshoe hikers. The magnificent view then compensates for all the effort, and at the three managed alpine huts, we can recover from the "hardships".
From the parking lot, we cross the bridge and turn onto the alpine road planned as a toboggan run, promising a comfortable ascent to the three alpine huts. We first pass the turnoff to Innerhoferalm, then to Marxeggeralm. 5 minutes later, our trail branches off from the road to Pircheralm on the left into the beautiful Würmtal, 1780 m. We hike above the stream through sparse larch forest into the valley until a narrowing, cross to the other side of the stream, and ascend through the narrow but not very steep valley section in short switchbacks up to the upper valley floor. The mostly heavily tracked slope in front of us clearly shows the route; over it, we gain the ridge height at about 2340 m with increasing steepness. We hike over a broad, often wind-blown ridge eastwards to the summit of the Henne adorned with a cross. The descent follows our ascent route.
