This snowshoe hike leaves nothing to be desired. A nostalgic ride on one of Europe's oldest cable cars with open gondolas, snow-covered forests and ancient trees. Gentle meadows alternate with views of rugged rock faces and an alternative route for the way back across extensive farm meadows characterise this tour. There are hardly any differences in altitude to overcome.
Author’s recommendation
There are always changing great photo impressions: ancient huge trees, old "tree corpses", Elmau Castle, ....
You should definitely not miss the ride on the adventurous open gondolas of the Eckbauer railway. On the way back over the Wamberg, you have the option of stopping off again at the Gasthaus Wamberg.

Roadbook
You start at the car park of the Eckbauer cable car in the Garmisch Olympic ski jumping stadium. In about 15 minutes you float up to the mountain station in the nostalgic open gondolas of the Eckbauer cable car (one-way ticket € 8.50). Just behind the lift building, turn left towards a large tree with a signpost. Firstly through the forest with huge ancient trees, you soon reach a clearing. Follow this uphill to a clearly visible wayside shrine. Now slightly downhill past various barns until you reach a fork in the path. Straight ahead, or slightly to the left, follow the "Höhenweg" to the Elmauer Alm, which is also designated as an official "Snow Shoe Trail" (to the right, you would reach the Alm on the cleared forest road). The trail now leads gently up and down with constantly new views and insights over the ridge through the snow-covered winter landscape. After about 1.5 hours you reach a fabulous-looking tree. The route up to this point is repeatedly marked with small yellow signs with snowshoes. After the "Hohle Ahorn", continue a short distance through the forest until you soon reach the forest road. Follow this road without difficulty to the Elmauer Alm. Return along the forest road to the junction where you came out of the forest on the "snowshoe route". This time, however, pass it and continue along the forest road until you find a small inconspicuous junction / sign (labelled Eckbauer) on the right-hand side after about 20 minutes. Turn right here up into the forest until you reach the previous snowshoe route again. Now turn left until you reach a junction just before the Eckbauerbahn mountain railway station. At this junction, follow the arrow labelled "Wamberg" down to the right. The trail descends somewhat more steeply through the snow-covered forest until you reach the farm meadows and then the hamlet of Wamberg with its church visible from afar. At the church, turn left for a short stretch through the village, past farms and the cemetery towards Garmisch. The ski jump is clearly visible, making orientation easy. Return to the first houses of Garmisch via a hollow path. Here you finally return to the car park without snowshoes.
