Cima Presena via upper Val Presena and Bocchetta della Sgualdrina
Little Fish Trek
Up to the final summit peak, it is not difficult: then, for the last 60/70 meters of elevation gain, it depends on conditions.
To say it is a frequented route (especially by skiers) is always an understatement, also considering the ease of “access from above” exploiting the lifts on the other side.
Thus, it is not a solitary hike but “a beautiful springtime” as a snowshoe pleasure: the upper part of Val Presena seems designed especially for this type of activity.
My overall rating for this snowshoe hike is “WT4”, averaging with the BRIEF final for the summit to be assessed case by case, otherwise it would be “WT3.”

Safety information
This snowshoe hike – considering the route development and exposures – requires a careful assessment of the snowpack risk level for the chosen day.It is advisable to take into account the following:
- “Memorize” the avalanche snow bulletin.
- In my opinion, it is not enough to look at it the day before, but you should check it every day throughout the winter season to understand well the evolution of the snowpack.
- At least one experienced person in the group who also knows the type of ground under the snow to better judge local situations.
- Granted that a book can never replace a course held by professionals, my favorite on the snow-avalanche theme is: “SNOW Compendium of Snow Science” by Renato Cresta – Mulatero publisher.
- Excellent, for risk reduction evaluation techniques, is: “AVALANCHES – How to reduce risk” by Philippe Descamps and Olivier Moret – EDIZIONI VERSANTE SUD.
- I quote, from another book, a phrase to always keep in mind: “Often random events are attributed to skills; snow is stable 95 percent of the time, but we confuse the absence of avalanches with our ability to make good decisions.”
- Snowshoes and skis are “two different worlds”: do not uncritically follow previous ski tracks.
Bring all necessary equipment.
Roadbook
This route was traveled on March 22, 2019, and all subsequent observations and considerations fully apply only to that day.

The development of the hike is very simple to interpret:
- Initial little road that crosses a tunnel about 120 meters long where you have to remove the snowshoes
- False flat that leads to the Lago Presena area
- Final valley of the upper Val Presena with varying slopes, but always wide enough to find the right line that is not difficult
- Arrival at the Bocchetta della Sgualdrina next to a pylon of the cable car that leads to the very close Passo Presena
- If conditions allow, from Passo Presena (cable car arrival) a short climb to the summit cross of Cima Presena
Since today I wanted to reach the summit, I had crampons in my backpack, and I had to use them in the last meters where there was a thin crust of almost icy snow.
It is not always like this: one day while skiing based at Passo del Tonale, I climbed to the summit with downhill ski boots and, all things considered, it was less risky than today despite the absolute inadequacy of the footwear.
Evaluate well what to do based on conditions, and if necessary give up: the final climb to Cima Presena can be approachable but also challenging, and it is definitely exposed, where slips are unforgivable.
Directions
You need to follow the SS 42 up to km 150-I east side of Passo del Tonale: from here, take the little road that quickly leads to the Vermiglio Treatment Plant.
