The ascent of the highest Karwendel peak involves a long approach that leads diversely through different vegetation zones, past steep gorges, and across the expanses of Kleiner Ahornboden and Hochalmsattel. In the upper section, you are rewarded with views of the even more breathtaking northern faces of the main ridge still covered in snow before turning into the Schlauchkar. The summit offers unforgettable views of the nearby Karwendel and large parts of the Eastern Alps.

    Author’s recommendation

It is advantageous to have already walked the route in summer.

It is essential to start the route at the latest at dusk to take advantage of the frozen crust and to avoid increasing avalanche danger and/or thawing of the snowpack after midday.

    Safety information

The route should only be taken at the lowest avalanche warning level. The upper Schlauchkar is very steep, with both avalanche and fall hazards. At the Schlauchkarsattel, a more or less large cornice may have formed.

The length of the route should not be underestimated. Avalanche danger can increase during the day and/or the snow cover can become slushy.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot, cross the road and follow the forest road towards Johannestal. At the signposts after about 1.5 km, turn left onto the path through the gorge. After crossing the stream in Johannestal, ascend to the Kleiner Ahornboden. There, take the signposted footpath to the right and not the gravel road. At the Hochalmsattel, keep left towards Karwendelhaus.

Behind the winter room, climb into the slope, cross it at the top between the avalanche barriers, and reach the right side into the Schlauchkar. First, ascend along the left slope past the first rock ledge, then continue more centrally upwards. At the upper end of the cirque, bypass the rock step on its left side and turn right into the hollow towards the Schlauchkarsattel.

On the saddle, overcome the cornice and go left to the Birkkarhütte. From there, ascend the summit not via the summer path but always keep left on the ridge to avoid crossing a very steep snow slope.

The descent follows the ascent route.
