Very popular route offering an impressive panoramic view of the neighboring Zillertal and Ötztal Alps. With only about 750 vertical meters (plus 150 vertical meters on the return), one can enjoy a 2000 vertical meter long descent.

    Author’s recommendation

A rewarding alternative with little snow (e.g., in the preseason) is the so-called Klier Route south of the Aper Pfaff.

Ascent: Absolutely start with the first mountain ride at 8:00 a.m.! At the valley station, it is best to buy a route card up to the Jochdohle and a lift ticket to use the T-bar lift on the way back to the Jochdohle. From the Jochdohle guesthouse at 3150 m, we ride along the Gaißkarferner on piste no. 5 into a hollow below the valley station of the T-bar lift.

Climb: Now it is time to put on skins (approx. 2800m). We reach the Pfaffenjoch (3213m) in a wide left turn via the Pfaffenferner. At the Pfaffenjoch, we switch to the north side. We cross below the north face of the Zuckerhütl to the Pfaffensattel (3344 m) between Zuckerhütl and Wildem Paff. In a few hairpin turns, we reach the beginning of the steep ascent of the Zuckerhütl. Here is the ski depot. To the summit, it is about 100 vertical meters further over the east face, which is up to 40° steep. Depending on conditions, crampons are required here, and a safety rope is advisable! After a total of 2.5 to 3 hours, the summit is reached.

Descent: in the area of the ascent. However, there is a counter-ascent back to the Jochdohle (300 vertical meters), unless we use the T-bar lift whose valley station is reached after about 150 vertical meters of counter-ascent. From the Eisjoch, the route goes along the piste to the Gamsgrube and further through the Wilde Grube into the valley. If the Wilde Grube descent is closed due to daytime warming and the associated avalanche danger, descend to the Dresdner Hütte and take the gondola from there to the valley.
