The Vorderseespitze is the dominant peak above the Kaisertal; however, it requires basic high alpine skills.

The Kaisertal with its initially gentle ascent offers enough time to warm up the body. Then follows ideal ski terrain, interrupted by a small intermediate descent and finally an exciting summit ridge.

    Author’s recommendation

Without crampons and possibly an ice axe, the Vorderseespitze is generally not achievable.

    Safety information

Carrying crampons is necessary. For less experienced hikers, especially on the descent of the lower part of the southeast ridge, the use of a rope (20 m) can be useful.

    Roadbook

We first walk leisurely along the alpine path to the Kaiseralpe. Soon we see our summit, which looks rather forbidding from here, for the first time. At about 1,960 m above sea level, we leave the Kaisertal and quickly gain height on the right of a blocking ridge towards the notch at 2,635 (south of the Stierlahnzugjoch). On the other side, it goes down briefly (consider descending on foot) and then immediately steeply up to the Vorderseeferner. We cross this glacier until the beginning of the southeast ridge. We ascend this ridge initially at grade 1 to the subpeak (2,874 m) and then continue more easily to the Vorderseespitze. After prolonged sun exposure, icy patches quickly develop at the start of the ridge, which require the use of crampons.

The descent follows the ascent route.
